Legacy Projects

"When the dreams of the community inspire a dream in you."

Legacy projects manifest when the dreams of the community touch the hearts of people who are to make the dream come true. These are the three legacy projects we are currently working on.

The Liggerman Education Centre - Marselle Community

The legacy of the Liggerman family through Save A Child Foundation and Helping Rhinos.

In 2020 a group of young mothers, attending our Social and Emotional Learning course, set a goal to establish an Early Childhood Development Centre in the shack area where they lived. These women were all unemployed and caring for young children who could not attend school because the closest school was too far away to walk and there was no money for transport.

We started dreaming with them. Six months later we were approached by Helping Rhinos, a long time partner and friend to the Kariega Foundation. Founder, Simon Jones, asked us casually, "Do you have any need for a new school in one of your communities? I have a donor who funds Early Childhood Development Centres."

Almost four years later, having overcome what sometimes felt like insurmountable challengers, The Liggerman Education Centre is about to open it doors to care for and educate 40 children between the ages of 1 and 4 years old, most of whom have not yet attended school. The school is registered as an NPO and governed by a committee with two representatives from the original young mother's group. In addition, two of the young mothers have been employed as assistants and they will start their ECD training in 2025.

The Liggerman Education Centre will open in January 2025.

The Wilson Education Centre - Ekuphumleni Community

The legacy of the Wilson family through Save A Child Foundation and Helping Rhinos.

The Shining Star ECD centre currently operates out of a shack that doubles as a Church. Dolly, the principal has twenty learners enrolled in the school. She is passionate about their care and education, despite her lack of resources and support.

We are partnering with Dolly and The Shining Star ECD centre, to build a new school for forty children in 2025.

Next steps include:

  1. Register The Wilson Education Centre NPO.
  2. Purchase allocate erf from Municipality to be owned by the NPO.
  3. Submit building plans for approval.
  4. Build and furnish school and source curriculum resources.
  5. Enrol learners.
  6. Open school in July 2025.

Ekuphumleni Youth Development Centre

The legacy of the Kenton-on-Sea community via the Seagull Regatta and The Kariega Foundation.

Khayalethu Ngangqu, affectionately known as Coach Cool, is the Kariega Foundation Youth Development Manager; ex-Bafana Bafana soccer player and a community hero.

He is passionate about sport and the role it plays in youth development. When we first met Khaya he shared his dream of a multi-purpose sports facility dedicated to youth development in his community of Ekuphumleni. He explained that his community (which over looks the Kariega River) does not have much open space for youth to play sport and they get very limited time to play on the fields at the Sports Ground because of the vibrant senior sports leagues.

We did some investigating and found a 10 000 square meter erf on the boundary of Ekuphumleni. It was for sale and seemed like the ideal place for the Ekuphumleni Youth Development Centre. The Kariega Foundation is in the process of purchasing this land and planning the next phases of this ambitious project.

Next steps include:

  1. Development of site map and business plan.
  2. Application to municipality for re-zoning.
  3. Invitation to potential project parters and fundraising.
  4. Submission of building plans for approval.
  5. Building of facility.
  6. Management of facility with community over a defined time period.
  7. Donation of facility to community under exclusive community management.
