Welfare

"Ubuntu is about a community coming together to help one another."

While our primary community objective is the sustainable improvement of livelihoods and well-being over time, we still have many families who need help today. Our community welfare project aims at making life a little easier today, while we move towards a brighter future.

Donations

We receive significant donations year round from guests visiting Kariega Game Reserve who chose to Pack for a Purpose, and many local individuals and organisations that support the work of the Kariega Foundation.

Donated items include stationary, educational games, books, puzzles, soft toys, baby clothes and nappies, sports equipment, school shoes and uniforms and sometimes furniture, household goods and linen.

Our Community Manager takes great care in the distribution of these goods and liaises with local clinics, schools, orphanages and churches to ensure they are distributed fairly and where there is greatest need.

Community Gardening

We promote sustainable food production through permaculture gardening. We offer interested community members the opportunity to attend permaculture training at our training garden and then follow through with garden assistance including fencing, compost, seedlings and gardening tools. The Kariega Volunteers offer amazing support in this space.

Special Needs Education

Children with disabilities or special needs in under resourced, rural communities are often completely neglected and their families and caregivers unsupported. The opposite should be true. With the right therapies and interventions children with special needs can reach their fullest potential and grow into adults with skills that contribute to their families and communities. In addition, these special children and adults often demonstrate an enormous capacity towards love, patience and compassion.

Our Special Needs Development Programme is aimed at showing love, care and support for children and youth living with special needs(disabilities) as well as their families and caregivers.

We work with Eluthandweni Special Needs School, the learners and their parents. We focus on:

  • Resources and infrastructure improvements for the school.
  • Mentorship and training of Principal and Assistants.
  • Transport for learners.
  • Training for parents on how to care for their special needs child.
  • Sourcing work opportunities with special needs adults.

Domestic Animal Care

Extending love and care to a domestic animals is often the first step in cultivating healthy relationships with people and the environment. This project offers community, animal lovers support in caring for their animals. Serval clinic days are facilitated as a collaboration between the Kariega Volunteers, local organisations and Vets where animals can get washed to rid them of flees, dewormed and given vaccination boosters. In addition, two or more mass sterilisation drives are facilitated each year, to manage populations and maintain good health for all domestic pets.
